Plentiful beaches, historic villages and hiking trails between Lagos, Monchique and Sagres.

Monte Rosa guesthouse is situated in the most southern province of Portugal on the south west corner of the Algarve, at a walking distance of 1.7 km from the village of Barão de São João.

This old authentic Portuguese village is made up of small houses, a couple of local grocery shops with organic products available, friendly cafes and small restaurants.

There is a bus which passes through Barão de São João and Bensafrim to Lagos on a daily basis.

Lagos (9km away) is an old city with beautiful beaches, pleasant markets and plenty of historical places of interest such as the old slave market for instance and the ancient walls of Lagos that were built in the 16th century.

Lagos has many shops and lots of typical Portuguese restaurants to choose from. You can eat fresh fish dishes or "frango piri-piri" (spicy grilled chicken). For those who enjoy nightlife there are plenty of cafés, bars and a couple of clubs.

Along the south coast you will find beautiful fishing villages like Burgau and Salema. Many people like to visit Sagres which is 30km away as it is the most south westerly point of Europe and has impressive rock formations.

The west coast is only a half hour drive away and is a splendid area for hiking with its unspoiled rocky beaches and beautiful views.

The old town of Silves with its Moorish architecture is a worthwhile visit as is the village of Monchique which is situated in the beautiful mountains where the Portuguese lead an uncomplicated life. You will find lots of interesting hiking trails and breathtaking views in this area.
